Daily Summary July 12, 2002, DOY = 193
The ship departed the dock at Charleston, South Carolina on schedule at 1700 ET. The pilot disembarked at 1845 and the Ship turned northeastward toward Cape Hatteras. Scientific crew were making final adjustments to instruments. Skies were cloudy with the occasional thunderstorm in the area. Aerosol sulfate, ammonium, organics, and nitrite measured on the aerosol mass spectrometer decreased as we left the harbor.
Once out of the immediate vicinity of Charleston, pollutant concentrations dropped to background levels. Early measurements of DMS indicated the expected correlation between wind speed and ambient levels, with higher concentrations observed at the higher wind speeds.
