Abstract

Climate change is upon us. Projections of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in the coming decades all show substantial increases. In contrast, scenarios in which global temperatures remain below 1.5°C above preindustrial levels all require substantial reductions in GHGs in the same coming decades. Reductions are a large technical, economic and social challenge. If it were to become necessary to cool the Earth quickly, climate intervention in the form of albedo modification of Earth's atmosphere is the only known method. I will provide a scientific perspective on climate intervention and the potential future role of NOAA research.
