The National Blend of Models: What is it? What is PSD doing to support it?

Abstract

The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) that underlies many of the NWS products is undergoing a major transformation; forecaster modification at the weather forecast office level will be de-emphasized, under the presumption that new centralized, post-processed weather guidance can be generated with dramatically improved quality. This centralized guidance (the "National Blend of Models" project) will be generated from multi-center ensemble and deterministic forecasts that have been post-processed to adjust for systematic errors. PSD's role is to supervise the post-processing efforts across NOAA and to act as a lead in the development of methods for the processing of precipitation data, including deterministic and probabilistic precipitation amounts, snowfall amounts, and precipitation type.

In addition to providing some context for the National Blend of Models, I will discuss PSD's current and future efforts in the post-processing of precipitation forecast guidance and will highlight some of the key technical issues we must deal with to make the National Blend project a success.
