ESRL/PSD Seminar Series
Balance and its flow dependency in data assimilation as diagnosed by normal modes
Nedjeljka Zagar
University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
Abstract
This seminar will present how the three-dimensional global normal-mode function expansion is used to quantify analysis and forecast uncertainties in terms of balanced and unbalanced motions, various horizontal scales and vertical structures. Ensembles of analyses and forecasts are results of the Data Assimilation Research Testbed system (DART) and the NCAR Community Atmospheric model (CAM). Of particular interest are large-scale divergent motions, especially equatorial waves. Results for the DART/CAM ensemble are compared with the ensemble of 4D-Var analyses produced by the ECMWF data assimilation system for the same time period.
