Observed and Simulated lead/lag correlations at weather station P in the North Pacific (50N, 145W) between temperature anomalies in the base layer, 45-55 m in August, and temperature anomalies in 5 m increments for the previous and following 8 months. The simulated field is obtained from a 500 year simulation in which a mixed layer ocean model forced by a statistical model of atmospheric conditions at OWS P.

The re-emergence mechanism is indicated by the relatively high correlation values that extend in a "U" shape from the surface layer in spring to the summer seasonal thermocline and returning to the surface in winter. At P the descending branch appears to be stronger than the return branch.
