Seattle snow depth

A downward looking acoustic sensor was installed at Seattle to monitor the changes in surface position. As the snow grew deeper in winter the distance from the surface to the sensor decreased and as the snow melted in the summer it increased. Below is a plot of hourly values of snow depth and ice surface melt for the SHEBA year. The large excursions in early December are noise due to winds moving the instrument. The gap in June resulted from a bear tripping on a guywire and breaking the mounting bracket for the sensor.
