Helo Photo Mission
8-Jul-98
Blue skies, with high clouds
Great visibility
Altitude:  6000 ft
Intervalometer set at 20 s
Way points are:
09:59  Away from Des Gros
10:05:25  Begin leg Ship:A, ground speed 140 kts
· More ponding evident, compared to last flight
· More open water than before, but patchy.  Some areas are broken up and some aren’t
· Melt ponds running along ridges
· 10:09:21 to turn at point A:  Lots of open water areas.  Some clear, some with large brash
10:10:45  Begin turn at point A
10:11:27  Begin leg A:B, ground speed 110 kts
· Many more ponds than last time
· What are the ponds with the fuzzy edges?
· Still lots of open water areas
· Most of ponds are a darker color, blue-gray
· Light blue ponds are often near areas of 1st year ridging
· 10:16:22:  Over area that less distinct ponds (fuzzy edges), but a lot of coverage.  Ponds also look oriented, sort of like rows of corn.  First year?
· 10:17:20:  Over large multiyear floe, no open water.  Turn at B made over this floe
10:18:00  Begin turn at point B, over multiyear floe with no open water
10:18:30  Begin leg B:C, ground speed 90 kts
· MY has more ponds
· Some FY still looks white.  Other FY is sheets of ponds, with 70-80% coverage.
· Open water is scatter, with no obvious pattern.
· 10.4 nm:  Another area without as many melt ponds
· While there are melt ponds along ridges, beyond this line of ponds there is often an area where there are no ponds. (Sketch in fieldbook)
· 10:20:11:  Far amount of open water, again.
· Some ponds are distinct (MY?), and others are less so (FY?)
· Not a significant number of black ponds
· Ridges are very bright, as are areas adjacent to them that have no meltponds (snow?)
· Open water randomly dispersed.  No significant lead patterns.  Occasional large floes.
· 10:26:37:  Cracks are perpendicular to leg direction
· 10:27:00:  Old lead?  Long feature where there are no meltponds in the center, while there are meltponds running along both sides, near ridges.  (Sketch in fieldbook)
· 10:29 to 10:30:30:  Over area with a significantly less meltponds  (May be in same area as 10.4 nm noted above)
· Areas with less distinct meltponds (FY?) appear gray between the meltponds.
10:35:35  Begin turn at point C, over broken area
10:36:22  Begin leg C:D, ground speed 120 kts
· What kind of ice are the blue ponds in?
· Still a fair amount of pond-free ice
· 10:40:30:  D.G. at 9 o’clock
· 10:40:38:  Very broken up
· Not all FY ice has begun to show meltponds
· 14.3 nm, 10:42:28:  Dirty floe
· On patches of FY ice (?) see meltponds 1st along the ridges, before melt on the flat areas.  Perhaps due to the depression of ice near ridges.
· 10:44:58 to 10:47:05:  Over larger floe, area without cracks
· 10:47:05 to 10:47:34:  Broken area
· 10:47:34 to turn at point D:  Area without cracks
10:49:00  Begin turn at point D, over area without cracks
10:49:45  Begin leg D:E, ground speed 145 kts
· 10:50:  Back over broken ice
· More broken up on this leg, some patterns to leads
· Breaks in ice at 60 deg clockwise to leg
· No big areas without cracks
10:54:40  Begin turn at point E, over broken area
10:55:38  Begin leg E:ship, ground speed 110 kts
· Less broken as approaching ship (this is good news!)
11:02:04   End of run
· Intervalometer off at 11:02:06
- Pass camp at 1000 ft, N to S, ground speed 85 kts
· » 11:06, turned intervalometer back on, at 2 s intervals
· 11:07:15  Dirty ice
· Colors of ponds look at lot more variable at this elevation.   At 6000 ft, there seemed to be two general colors:  light blue and blue/gray
· 11:11:07:  Over open water, turn back towards camp
- Pass over camp at 500 ft
· Intervalometer off at 11:11:37, on again at 11:12:30.  Off at 11:15:10
· 11:15: Photo of camp
11:15  Touch down on Des Gros
