Aerial areas

The aerial photographs are currently being analyzed to determine the relative areas of ice, ponds, and leads. All photos have been digitized and stored in Kodak photoCD format on a series of 36 CD-ROMs. Image processing software (Optimas 6.0) is used to partition the photos into three components: ice, ponds, and leads. After this partitioning, relative areas can be computed as well as perimeter and size distribution of ponds, leads, and floes.

Average values of relative areas of ice, ponds, and leads for four aerial photo flights. Over 100 photos were analyzed for each flight, for a total area of more than 100 km2. Note the sharp increase in lead fraction between late July and early August.

Area fraction of ice, ponds, and leads measured from aerial photos. Each point is a photo covering more than 1 km2.
