Fei graduated from Johns Hopkins University with training in planetary science, computer science, and writing. His Ph.D. was on climatology and he worked with earlier versions of CCSM on NASA Goddard super computers. He has worked on the GFDL Flexible Modeling System (FMS) in the areas of model construction, build, test, result verification, and performance optimization. Dr. Liu played an important role in reorganizing coupler in GFDL coupled model and porting the atmospheric model from MIPSpro to IA32 and Itanium2 platforms. He also worked for a private company making network security appliances, dealing with various issues of Unix system programming, software scalability, and internet security. Dr. Liu is responsible for the ESMF Field-level classes and Xgrid, and has worked the last few years doing joint development with the CESM team. Dr. Liu loved playing soccer with his friends but now he has retried from injuries. He officiates league and tournament games in NJ as an official US soccer referee.
