ESRL Representation at UVS International 2007
Sara Summers and Betsy Weatherhead attended the UVS International 2007, a conference held in Paris, France, June 11-15. Representatives from OAR Headquarters also attended.
Summers gave a presentation on NOAA's interest in using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for NOAA missions. She discussed how measurements using UAS have the potential to fill gaps in the global observing system, and described NOAA's long-range plans for developing UAS testbeds in the United States to monitor such phenomena as hurricanes and Arctic ice melt in regions that are not adequately monitored by existing observing platforms.
UVS (Unmanned Vehicle Systems) International is Europe's annual event for unmanned systems. It is an international conference and exhibition that focuses on all classes of UAS, certification and air traffic management issues, program updates, operational experience, and lessons learned, as well as requirements and new system developments. Presentations are given by internationally recognized specialists to broaden the awareness of current and future military and civil/commercial UAS operators, regulatory operators, regulatory authorities, and industry representatives.
NOAA's participation in this international arena is an example of how we support and promote important policies and interest in ecosystem management, climate change, Earth observation, and weather forecasting and seek to maximize the mutual benefits of international exchange with our global partners (cross-cutting priority International Cooperation and Collaboration).
