ESRL Hosts WRF Executive Oversight Board Meeting
ESRL's Global Systems Division (GSD) hosted the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Executive Oversight Board meeting at the NOAA Boulder Labs on July 31, 2007. The effort to develop and sustain WRF has been a collaborative partnership, principally among the National Center for Atmospheric Research, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction and GSD, the Air Force Weather Agency, the Naval Research Laboratory, the Oceanographer of the Navy, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Army Research Laboratory. Members from these organizations met to discuss current research and program status as well as new directions in the development of WRF applications.
Serving both operational forecasting and atmospheric research needs, the WRF is a next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system that provides an operational forecasting model that is flexible and efficient computationally. Additionally, it offers many advances in physics, numerics, and data assimilation contributed by the research community.
With its rapidly growing user community, the WRF model contributes to improving the accuracy and timeliness of our weather prediction capabilities, supporting NOAA's mission goal of serving society's need for improved weather and water information.
