Improving Weather Support for Western Range Launch Operations
Staff of FSL's Modernization and Systems Development Divisions have entered into an agreement with Lockheed Martin to provide software support for Air Force space operations. A tailored version of the National Weather Service Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) has been installed at Lockheed Martin's development facility in Santa Maria, California. After testing and additional development work by FSL staff, the PC-Linux processing and display network will be installed at the Air Force Western Range facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
Initial modifications to the system accommodate ingest and display of some Range-specific weather instruments and support weather briefings during launch operations. Additional tasks will add more datasets, plus visualization methods to help weather officers better diagnose and detect launch hazards.
