Probabilistic Forecasting Software Application
3D Visualization
Recently, a display using a 3D Histogram was developed by the GSD GFE team. This capability is under development and will be compatible with both the GFE and ALPS D2D systems via a web interface.
Below is an example of a 3D histogram of temperature over an area comprising about 100 grid points:
In this display, the horizontal axis shows temperature increasing to the right, the vertical axis shows time increasing up, and the count for each temperature/time bin is in the third dimension. The diurnal variation of temperature can be clearly seen on the right side of the diagram. While lack of diurnal variation on the coldest side of the histogram is a mystery, the main portion of the distribution does follow the same diurnal pattern as the warmer side.

Note: Must have Flash Plug-in installed in order to view the video. You can control the animation (i.e. play, rewind, stop, etc.) via a pop-up menu by right clicking on the screen.
