The photographs below of the horizon were taken by Kin Coulson from Mauna Loa Observatory during the presunrise period on May 14, 1982. These pictures show the dramatic colors induced by the El Chichon volcanic cloud. On this day the volcanic cloud over MLO was at its most strongly developed phase, as shown by lidar measurements. The top of the cloud was at about 30-km altitude MSL. The first picture in the series was taken at 0439 LST (-14.4° solar depression angle). Sunrise was at 0548 LST.
