1956 - Dedication of Mauna Loa Slope Observatory
In November, 1955, the Weather Bureau (with the cooperation of the National Bureau of Standards) began work on the construction of the present observatory located at the end of the road at the 11,140 ft level.

On June 28, 1956, a group of about 80 people attended the dedication of the "Mauna Loa Slope Observatory". The honorable Samuel Wilder King , Governor of the Territory of Hawaii, attended the dedication along with representatives from various scientific, military, press, and government agencies.
