Network

The Gassaway building has a 100MHz TCP/IP Ethernet network connected to the Internet though a dedicated T-1 (1.544 Mbps) contracted with MCI WorldCOM for the duration of SOS99. A TCP/IP tunnel to Boulder will be in place to enable the use of NOAA Aeronomy Lab resources, and control of IP numbers and the firewall (this firewall will not restrict participant work). For each network device a twisted pair cable with a RJ-45 connector is supplied. Participants must supply all other hardware required to connect and operate network devices.

A word about SOS printers... There are 4 printers (2 color and 2 B&W) on-line and available to everyone. An HP LaserJet 4M+ and an Epson Color 900N are located in the center of the open area. An HP LaserJet 4000N and another Epson Color 900N are located in the office area. Extra paper and toner cartridges are in proximity.

Macintosh users: From the Chooser select the LaserWriter8 driver. Setup "1stFloor Lab 4M+" or "TropChem (Private)". If you find you are missing the correct printer description file, contact Cathy.
Windows 95/98 users: SOS is in the workgroup/domain "domain2". Enable WINS in the Network Control Panel and set 140.172.240.6 as primary. Obtain the SOS Microsoft Networking username and password from Cathy, and Restart.
- From the Start menu, Find computer... Alntsrvr. Drag the "1-4MLab" or "tropchem" printer into your Printers folder.
- OR, Double click Add Printer. Select a Network Printer and Browse the Alntsrvr for "1-4MLab" or "tropchem". If you cannot Browse the Alntsrvr, contact Cathy for hints.
Windows NT users: Add the Appletalk protocol from the Network control panel (if it's not already added). Double click Add Printer. Select My Computer and Add Port for an Appletalk printing device. Or use above method for Win95/98.

Participants may access the SOS1999 data archive for P3 data in ICARTT format, and in Igor binary format.

Meetings

Refer to the Daily Plan-it for the latest meeting details. Meetings during SOS 99 will cease as of Friday, July 16, 1999. General information is as follows:

Flight planning meetings will be held daily at 8:00 AM and/or 1:00 PM in the Gassaway Conference Room. These meetings will consist of (1) a review of information from the previous day's flights, (2) meteorological forecasts, and (3) a discussion of flight plans for the day. This meeting will provide an opportunity for the meteorologists to brief the flight planners on the latest weather conditions for last minute changes in that day's flight plans. Since there is an added emphasis on nighttime processes, many flights, particularly for the G-1, will be made at night. With this in mind, the flight planning meetings will be here at 8:00AM and/or 1:00 PM to accommodate the flight planning and flight schedules of all the aircraft.
Informal planning meetings and weather briefing will be held at 1:00 PM on days preceding a flight in the Gassaway Conference Room. These briefings will provide information allowing Bill Parkhurst to file informal flight plans with the FAA before 3:00 PM that day for flights to be made the following day. Each individual aircraft planning team is responsible for providing Bill Parkhurst with a general flight plan and map for the following day by 2:00 PM. By agreement with the FAA, Bill will submit these plans to the Nashville Tower by 3:00 PM. On those days when a flight-planning meeting is held at 1:00 PM, that meeting will also serve as the informal planning meeting.
Science Team Coordination Meetings, covering all aspects of the 1999 Nashville Field Study will be held every Wednesday night at 8:00 PM in the Gassaway Conference Room.
The Surface Measurements group will meet each Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Gassaway conference room to discuss results and resolve problems.
The Science Symposia will be held Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. at the Gassaway conference room. Meetings will focus on some of the interesting new findings emerging from the current study.
Other specialty meetings are being considered.

Depending on the length of stay, the room rates range from $35 to $45 per night. Federal Tax waivers are accepted and should be used. Each of us is responsible for securing his or her own room reservations. When making your reservation you should speak with Mindy A. Hobbs and preface your request with the fact that you are a member of the SOS/TVA Field Study and that you would like one of the 50 rooms reserved for that purpose. The rooms will be distributed on a first come-first serve basis and so we urge each of you to make your reservations as soon as practical. Remember that Nashville Fan Fair 1999 overlaps with the timing of the study and rooms in Nashville will be at a premium.

Some Aeronomy Lab participants found a great hotel alternative on Music Row, the Spence Manor, for something out of the ordinary with true Nashville flavor!
