Data Description

During the TexAQS II experiment, NOAA/ESRL's OPAL lidar aboard the Ron Brown measured profiles of aerosol backscatter at 355 nm and ozone. Data plots are available here for select days for three types of profiles: (1) calibrated aerosol backscatter coefficient, (2) ozone concentration, and (3) uncalibrated backscatter intensity.

The aerosol backscatter coefficient data (1) are range-corrected, and calibrated using a modified Klett retrieval method. These calibrated data combine all angles in the step-stare sequence (typically 2-, 6-, 20- and 90-degree elevation angles) and both near and far channels when possible. The white line in each image is a preliminary estimate of the aerosol mixed layer height based on strength of the gradient. The ozone concentration (2) is presented for 20-minute averages. The "quick look" intensity data (3) are the natural logarithm of the range-corrected aerosol backscatter intensity with no quality control and from only the vertical (90-degree) data.

These data are provided through the efforts of Janet Machol, Wynn Eberhard, Brandi McCarty, Richard Marchbanks, Christoph Senff, Sara Tucker, Alan Brewer, Joanne George, Dan Law, Ron Richter, and Scott Sandberg.

Data Policy

We welcome collaborations and will assist in interpretation and evaluation of the data. Please discuss other available data products or any planned use of the data with one of the scientists listed below. We request that an acknowledgment to the "NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory" accompany the use of this data in any publication or presentation.

Contact Janet Machol (janet.machol@noaa.gov) for inquiries regarding the ozone data, Wynn Eberhard (wynn.eberhard@noaa.gov) for inquiries regarding the aerosol data, and Joanne George (joanne.george@noaa.gov) for questions regarding web access.
